How to Read a Ruler: 1/16 Inch Fractions & Millimeter Markings Made Simple

Learn how to read an inch ruler and metric ruler with ease. Understand 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 inch fraction tick marks, line heights, and millimeter readings.

To read an imperial ruler, look at line height: the longest numbered lines are full inches, the second longest is 1/2″, followed by 1/4″, 1/8″, and the shortest line is 1/16″. To read a metric ruler, each numbered line is a centimeter (10 mm) and each small tick is 1 millimeter (mm).

Staring at an imperial ruler covered in dozens of unlabeled tick marks can feel overwhelming. But once you understand the simple pattern of line heights, reading any ruler in inches or centimeters becomes second nature.

Anatomy of an Inch Ruler (Fraction Breakdown)

On our 12-Inch Online Ruler, each whole inch is subdivided into 16 equal intervals. That means each tick mark represents 1/16 of an inch.

The Secret: Line Heights Tell You the Fraction

You do not need to count sixteen tiny lines every time. Rulers use descending line lengths to identify the fractions immediately:

  • Longest line with number: Whole Inch (1″, 2″, 3″...)
  • Second longest line (halfway): 1/2 Inch (8/16″)
  • Third longest line: 1/4 Inch and 3/4 Inch
  • Medium line: 1/8, 3/8, 5/8, and 7/8 Inch
  • Shortest line: 1/16, 3/16, 5/16, 7/16, 9/16, 11/16, 13/16, and 15/16 Inch

How to Read a Metric Ruler (CM & MM)

The metric system is decimal-based, making it much easier to calculate:

  • Numbered marks: Centimeters (cm). 1 cm = 10 millimeters.
  • Medium tick in the middle: 5 millimeters (0.5 cm).
  • Smallest ticks: 1 millimeter (mm).

Frequently Asked Questions

How many lines are in an inch on a standard ruler?▼

Most standard imperial rulers have 16 divisions per inch (16 ticks). Some precision metal shop rulers divide down to 32nds or 64ths of an inch.

What is between 1/4 and 1/2 on a ruler?▼

Directly in the middle is 3/8 of an inch (0.375 inches).

How do you reduce fractions on a ruler?▼

Count the 16th marks from the nearest whole inch. If you land on an even number, simplify: 2/16 becomes 1/8, 4/16 becomes 1/4, 8/16 becomes 1/2, and 12/16 becomes 3/4.
